On The Bright Side…

I am a Red’s fan. Ryan is a Giants fan. We obviously want those two teams to win the World Series. If not the Reds then I hope the Giants win. If not the Giants he better hope the Reds win. If neither of these teams win, well someone else will. And of course on one level that will suck. But more than a Reds fan, I’m a baseball fan and here are some positives that would come from each of the other teams winning it all.

I’m putting these in the order I’d like them to win (following of course the Reds and Giants.)

Brian Giles Retires

Seeing that Brian Giles retired is no surprise. What is surprising is how I came across the news. I was just looking through transactions on MLB.com and amid all the assignments and options I saw “RF Brian Giles retired.” Simple as that. I don’t know if the story made the MLB.com News front page. I’m sure it didn’t make the main MLB.com front page (correct if I’m wrong). I only mention this because, it’s wild how quickly a guy, even a solid major leaguer, can disappear from baseball. If I hadn’t looked at the transactions I might not have figured it out for a really long time. (more…)

UPDATED: NRI List

Just a quick note. I made some major updates to the consolidated non-roster invitee list. These updates primarily involved the Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays.

I hate the fact this “quick note” will get a Yankees tag, which will cause it to increase in size and might draw your attention to the fact that amidst my complaining of the media focusing too heavily on Boston and New York, I too write about them disproportionately.

And to make this more interesting. A video.

2010 Consolidated List of Non-roster Invitees

Below you’ll find a comprehensive list of the 2010 MLB Spring Training Non-roster invitees for all Major League teams, as of February 8, 2010. This information is easy to obtain, but not as easy to compile and format, into one master list so I ask that if you want to take the entire list for whatever purpose you at least cite your source. I’ll cite mine. MLB.com To make things more interesting I also add links to unofficial team blogs for each of the Major League baseball teams and on some players I added links to random blogs pertaining to the player. Quick Conversation With Jeremy Fikac

I graduated from Texas State University in May of 2008, but like most alumni from most schools, I continue to take an interest in their athletics. I recently noticed former major league pitcher, Jeremy Fikac had been hired as an assistant coach. Jeremy had pitched for the San Diego Padres, Oakland A’s and the Montreal Expos and made one last stop in the San Fransico Giants minor league system before retiring with a respectable 4.56 ERA. I got into contact with him and he offered to meet with me next time I came into San Marcos. Well I finally got down there and was able to talk to him for a few minutes before he had to get to work. New Printing Plate

I got another printing plate today. This means I’ve gone from zero one-of-ones to three in just a couple months. Which just goes to show how common and far from rare they are. Individually of course, they are very rare. But if you want a “one-of-one” you can get one easily. This is a Chris Denorfia 2006 Flair Showcase. Denorfia played 67 games for the Cincinnati Reds from 2005 to 2006, so it’s a good card for my team collection. He has not really made a hobby impact or an impact in the big leagues, but only a few do. He’ll be headed to spring training with the San Diego Padres and hopefully he will see some time on their big league roster this year.

He only has one standout item on eBay right now and that’s 2006 Upper Deck Auto-Facts printing plate. The seller wants $49.95. I don’t think it will sell. I got my plate for much cheaper than that.
