Tony Kornheiser Suspended For Doing What He’s Paid To Do

Tony Kornheiser was suspended because of these comments about ESPN’s Hannah Storm.
Hannah Storm, Tony Kornheiser, ESPN, SportsCenter

“She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body … I know she’s very good, and I’m not supposed to be critical of ESPN people, so I won’t … but Hannah Storm … come on now! Stop! What are you doing? … She’s what I would call a Holden Caulfield fantasy at this point.”

Uhh, that sounds exactly like the Tony Kornheiser that I love watching on Pardon the Interruption. He and Michael Wilbon, make the show great by ragging on people and by going overboard with it. (more…)

Not This Again

If there’s one type of person I can’t stand (and believe me, there’s more than one) it is family/friends of deceased or incarcerated criminals who can’t see their family member or friend with any objectivity whatsoever. I admit, that may not be fair of me. It’d be a tough situation. But tough situations can be handled well. If your dad flies a plane into a government building, calling him a “hero” is not handling it well. Even if you offer your “deepest condolences” to the victim’s family. That’s just like a slap in the face. “I’m sorry your dad is dead, but my dad is a hero for doing that thing caused your dad to die.”

Joe Stack’s daughter, Samantha Bell, also had this to say “But if nobody comes out and speaks up on behalf of injustice, then nothing will ever be accomplished,” Uhhh hello? Start a blog or something like the rest of us are doing! You want to talk about injustice? Here’s a story about this fellow who survived two tours of duty in Vietnam (more…)

Less of a Shotgun Wedding, More of a Handgun Wedding

I just read a story about this 21 year old, Indian male, Pankaj Kishore Karotia who had just got married. His uncle decided to fire a celebratory gunshot in the air. Sadly, (or “naturally”) “As he was loading it, it fired accidentally and hit his newly-wed nephew in the head.” First of all, while I buy the part that shooting the nephew was an accident, I don’t buy “As he was loading it, it fired accidentally”. Maybe, I would accept “Shortly after loading it, he accidentally fired the gun” or (more…)

January 2010 Link Round-up; Highlights and Lowlights

Well due to the success of my 2009 link round-up I decided to make it a monthly think. So again, this link dump will feature content created in January 2010 and some older content which I just happened to come across this month.

The case against 5 former Blackwater guards was dropped after it was horribly mishandled by the prosecuting team. And I do mean horribly. <The Wall Street Journal>

The Mets were weird when they were good. <The Big Lead>

Avatar almost had to raise their MPAA rating. What I am a talking about? Why a deleted Na’avi sex scene involving those tentacles of theirs. <Filmdrunk> (more…)

Donations To Haiti Relief – What’s Real? What’s Efficient?

I got it in my mind to make a small donation to Haiti relief efforts, but I didn’t want to simply find the nearest paypal button associated with the word “Haiti” and send off my money. I wanted to avoid a scam, obviously but more than that I wanted to put the money in hands who would use it wisely in relief efforts and not see it swallowed up by administrative or fund-raising costs. I personally don’t want to pay for a TV spot asking for more money. I also figure a few other people might find themselves in my situation so I decided to provide highlights of my research. (more…)

eBay Gift Cards on eBay

I just noticed that if you search eBay for eBay gift cards you’ll find them going for a dollar or two above their value. I looked and you can buy them on eBay with free shipping. You can even get them personalize and customized. But people would rather pay a slight premium to get them from other sources. Can anyone explain this to me? Frankly it seems stupid. Take this one for instance $100 in gift cards. Currently at $103.53 and the seller only has a feedback score of 28. What gives?

Tickets For Tots

A lot of stories have broken recently involving cops who mess up. From bringing a gun to a snowball fight to being involved in two drunk hit-and-runs in one night. But the overwhelming majority are officers who truly respect the law and got into the profession because they wanted to make a positive difference.

The Sansom Park Police Department in North Texas recently made national news for a program they have (more…)

Brittany Murphy Dead at 32

From King of the Hill to Sin City, Happy Feet to 8 Mile Brittany Murphy displayed her wide-ranging acting and voice talents. She could play a ridiculous and dense character or a despondent and brooding character while being thoroughly convincing in either role. She could be sexy or she could be laughable. Through it all she always struck me as a real, down-to-earth person. Granted I never met her, but if a Hollywood starlet can give off that impression from her platform then she is doing something right and something different. (more…)

The selfish nature of [this] man

If writers were to be believed, poignant moments happen all the time. In truth, I think such moments are very rare, and when they happen they often go unnoticed.

A few days ago, I was playing golf. Walking to the sixth tee box, I saw two men conversing as they moved toward No. 8’s tee box. They were parting ways. One would be teeing off, the other had to go pick up his kids.

“I never had kids,” the one said. “Must be nice, someone to carry your family name.”
