Why Komen?

I just read this article on some HS football refs who may be suspended for using pink whistles in a football game. I support their cause (breast cancer) and I appreciate their willingness to risk suspension and the loss of three paychecks. My only question is why Susan G. Komen? It’s hard to assess which charities are great and which are not, but I’ve generally understood Komen to be one of those charities which became a brand and lost sight of it’s goals. The comments on Charity Navigator, while unscientific, support my general opinion of the charity. (more…)

Grossly Innacurate Headline

This does not need much commentary. It’s from HoustonChronicle.com.
The headline is “Drunken driver convicted in officer’s death”. The story…

Richard Anthony Sandoval, 23, will face a maximum of 20 years in prison after being convicted Wednesday of intoxication assault of a police officer.

HPD officer Lloyd Morrison, 51, was investigating a crash on the Gulf Freeway when he was struck by a car driven by Sandoval and pinned against a firetruck May 23, 2009. Morrison testified that he suffered two broken legs and an injured shoulder.

Jurors in state District Judge Shawna Reagin’s court will continue hearing testimony today.

Count the Contradictions

I saw this comment in an article which stated Wal-Mart is going to start selling iPads. The comments after a news article are generally a source for some of the most inane, ignorant thoughts ever contributed to the Internet. They’re especially bad following articles relating to crime, but this one stood out because the article hardly covers a controversial topic. The crime related ones are just to easy to hate.

Wal-Mart single-handedly killed small town USA. They truly are “too big to fail” Stop and think what will happen if Wal-Mart suddenly went under.
It’s time to start pulling back and let them die a slow death.

Hire This Man

Now I’m writing this blog post based on one online newspaper article, so it could be that some facts are omitted which would cause me to change my stance. That being said “Sgt. Osvaldo Hernandez has been trying to join the NYPD since 2008, but was blocked because of a 2002 gun arrest.”
When he young Hernandez was caught with a gun in his car and did 8 months in jail before joining the Army. Since then he has proven himself in combat, both as a leader and as a subordinate. (more…)

MLB.com You Disappoint Me

How did I learn that the Rays won the AL East and the Yanks slipped down to the Wild Card?

I saw this.

Nothing about the Rays winning the AL East. Instead the Yankees lose out and still get the acclaim. Granted this is an MLBShop headline, and not an actual headline. So what about the actual headlines? (more…)

Worst Knock-off Commercial Ever

Ok the viral video series for advertising concept is already old. Garnier Fructis is trying to do their own version, and of course it’s in the fashion of instructing men how to be more manly men. This is from Garnier Fructis… Who the hell needs to be told by them how to be a man? But wait. It gets worse. Much worse. Not only is the general concept overdone and unoriginal, but they specifically copied another “man tip” from another commercial. How to get a ride home from a bar.

Here’s the original one

You remember that right? It’s not that old. It might even be playing still.
The knock-off after the jump. (more…)

On The Bright Side…

I am a Red’s fan. Ryan is a Giants fan. We obviously want those two teams to win the World Series. If not the Reds then I hope the Giants win. If not the Giants he better hope the Reds win. If neither of these teams win, well someone else will. And of course on one level that will suck. But more than a Reds fan, I’m a baseball fan and here are some positives that would come from each of the other teams winning it all.

I’m putting these in the order I’d like them to win (following of course the Reds and Giants.)

1. Minnesota Twins (more…)
