HOUSTON – A Houston woman has been arrested in the hit-and-run death of and 8-year-old girl.
Vilma Rivas Buchala, 45, is charged with failure to stop and render aid.
Tragic, but not exceptionally interesting (a tragedy in itself) until you read on.
The little girl was leaving the soccer fields at Bear Creek Park with her mother when she broke away and ran across the parking lot.
Witnesses said the woman driving the SUV that struck Destiny stopped, then said “I didn’t hit her” and drove away.
Investigators said Buchala did not cause the accident and would not have faced charges if she had stopped and waited for officers.
“I didn’t hit her.” Wow. I guess she wasn’t very convincing with that lie. That’s like punching someone in the face and saying “I didn’t hit you.” It’s not gonna give you any lenience with that person and it sure as hell won’t convince them that they misinterpreted what just happened. Granted, she probably panicked and who knows what else, when she hit the little girl, Destiny Garcia. It’s obvious due to her completely irrational reaction. But why panic? Use your faculties in an emergency situation. Not even because it’d make you a better person, but simply for the selfish reason of protecting yourself!
If you do panic and drive away, then realize what you’ve done it’d be a good time to call the cops and start straightening things out. If it’s true that she “feared for her life after being intimated by several witnesses on the scene.” she should’ve established that fact very quickly with law enforcement. Saying “I didn’t hit her.” and then leaving was about the stupidest way she could have handled the situation.
