Someone is in denial. A guy plays baseball in the 70s and 80s and then in 2010 it’s news that he used amphetamines and marijuana during his playing career?!Even this MLB.com article knows enough to say “But the use of amphetamines or “greenies” was widespread throughout baseball going back to at least the 1960’s and most likely well before that.” Everyone used them. They may slightly enhance a players performance, but they should in no way be grouped with tradition PEDs like steroids and HGH. Not only that but they weren’t banned at the time. That being said, marijuana is illegal now and was illegal then. But… Let’s get real. Punishing a guy for smoking a little pot in the 70s just doesn’t make sense to me.
The only funny thing about it is how all this old news seems to be making more waves than the initial report which brought it on. Washington used cocaine last year? Uhhhh what?! What was he thinking? Don’t get me wrong, I have no intention of demonizing him for using cocaine. It was a mistake, hopefully it hadn’t happened before. It’s just the stupidity of a man who is almost 60 years old using cocaine is astronomical. What kind of party was he at?
I’m not excusing any of his actions. However, I do not think it’s appropriate that the news is creating such a story when A. most of it happened in the 70’s and 80’s and B. most of the people reading the story and even those (especially those) disseminating the story have equally embarrassing skeletons in the closet. Let’s all get over it. If it’s a legal issue that’s between him and the state, local or federal government. If it effects his job performance the Texas Rangers can deal with that. But as far as I’m concerned it’s a personal issue. I never placed him on a moral pedestal, so he hasn’t fallen for me. It’s essentially a nonissue.
