As if this country isn’t broke enough, Army Captain Michael Dung Nguyen pleaded guilty to stealing around $690,000 from the government while he was stationed in Iraq. I don’t know the details of this case, but how could he have expected to get away with that, when the money was under his care? What’s worse is that this was money designated for humanitarian relief and reconstruction in Iraq. Instead he used it to buy vehicles (including a 2009 Hummer), computers and furniture. To further show how stupid Nguyen is, he made large, frequent deposits into US banks, which were tracked by the IRS.
I understand that military personnel should be paid more for what they do. Especially while they are overseas. But that is not the way to go about getting the compensation you think you deserve. That will just get you around 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.
